What's Happening in Westport This Weekend

WESTPORT, Conn. – From charitable causes to festive celebrations, there’s a variety of events happening in and around Westport this weekend to choose from. Here’s a look at some of the events happening around town over the next three days.

Friday, May 4

Art Café: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Using the Friday "New York Times" Arts Section as a starting point, participants engage in a discussion about the arts and how they relate to the local community. Complimentary refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Westport Arts Center at 203-222-7070.

Designer House Tour: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Near and Far Aid’s annual fundraiser offers the chance to tour five homes in Westport and Fairfield decorated by prominent interior designers. The event starts with a breakfast at the Patterson Club, 1118 Cross Highway, Fairfield.

Into the Woods: 8 p.m. Travel “Into the Woods” as you watch the classic Stephen Sondheim musical come to life at the Westport Country Playhouse. Tickets are $25 to $65. The show runs through May 26. For tickets, visit www.westportplayhouse.org.

Saturday, May 5

Cinco de Earthplace: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Celebrate the traditions of Cinco de Mayo at Earthplace. Highlights will include a moonbounce, maraca making and other crafts, a Mexican hat dance, music with the Murthas, tacos and piñatas. See what animals Connecticut has in common with Mexico and participate in a tradition Mexican parade. For a schedule of events, visit Earthplace.com. The cost is $20 for member families and $25 for nonmember families.

Relay For Life: 2:30 p.m. Help find a cure for cancer by walking in the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay For Life event at Weston High School, 115 School Road. Sticks for Soldiers: 3:30 p.m. The Staples High School boys varsity lacrosse team is hosting a fundraiser game at Staples Stadium to benefit Sticks for Soldiers, a local charity that aids wounded U.S. military veterans. Tickets are $5.

Derby Day Celebration: 4 to 7 p.m. The Pequot Library (720 Pequot Ave.) hosts its annual fundraiser centered around the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby. Tickets are $60 for individuals and $300 for a tailgate. Tickets are available at the library’s website.

Sunday, May 6

Gospel Music at the Westport Arts Center:  3 p.m. Learn the origins and evolution of gospel music during a discussion at the Westport Arts Center, 51 Riverside Ave. The discussion will be followed by a soul-stirring and inspiring performance delivered by Angela Clemmons Wanda Houston and Michael Brown. Families are welcome. Tickets are $25 and $10 for college students and younger.
