Chad Knight fanned 14 batters and allowed one hit as Westport defeated Lincoln, R.I., 1-0, on Saturday evening in Bristol. Westport won its first New England championship and extended its summer winning streak to 18 games without a loss.

Westport will play South Nashville of Tennessee in its first World Series game Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

Westport scored its only run in the fifth when Ricky Offenberg led off with a double. Drew Rogers singled, and Christopher Drbal walked to loaded the bases with none out.

After a strikeout, Offenberg scored on a fielder’s choice by Knight. The Rhode Island third baseman appeared to have a chance to throw Offenberg out at home, but he mishandled the ball and settled for a forceout at third. A strikeout ended the inning.

Knight dominated throughout. He allowed only a bunt single in the fifth inning, and 56 of his 74 pitches were for strikes. No Rhode Island runner reached second base.

Westport’s win was its toughest date so far this summer. In the New England regional, Westport pitchers threw three shutouts and the team outscored six opponents, 43-8.

The team earlier this summer won the first state championship for Westport. They follow teams from Fairfield and Shelton, also from Connecticut’s District 2, as recent winners of the New England Regional.
