Game 1 in the best-of-three series starts at 3 p.m. Game 2 is Sunday at 3 p.m, and the if-necessary game will be Monday at 6:30 p.m. The state winner advances to the New England Regional in Bristol beginning next week.
Westport advanced to the state championship by finished undefeated in District 2 and Section 1 competition. Westport secured its spot in the state final with a 5-3 win over Edgewood on Wednesday in Stamford.
Charlie Roof’s two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning snapped a 3-3 tie. Max Popken got the final three outs in the bottom of the seventh for Westport. Westport took a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning before Edgewood forced extra innings with a two-out home run by Cory Fradette.
Shortstop Ricky Offenburg and catcher Matt Stone made several fine defensive plays for Westport, while Harry Azadian and Chad Knight combined with Popken who limited a hard-hitting Edgewood team to just four hits. Chris Drbal (three hits) had a double and a triple and Tatin Llamas hit a home run for Westport.
Westport is 10-0 so far this summer. It is playing in the state championship series for the first time.
