WESTPORT, Conn. – The chase for the top seed in the Fairchester Athletic Association boys basketball playoffs heats up Wednesday when Greens Farm Academy of Westport and Brunswick School clash in Greenwich at 6 p.m.
Both teams have one league loss. The Dragons (11-2 overall, 8-1 in the league) defeated Brunswick on Dec. 8, 67-48. Brunswick (8-6 overall) has won six straight league games since that contest.
“It’s exciting when they pack the house at Brunswick,’’ Greens Farms coach Doug Scott said. “They don’t have much seating. When they bring in hundreds of people, it’s like people are standing five deep all around the court. You feel like you’re in a gladiator stage. The noise is deafening.”
Greens Farms has rolled through the league for much of the season. The Dragons’ only hiccup came in a 65-57 loss at King of Stamford on Jan. 10.
“It’s the great nature of sports,’’ Scott said. “It was one of those nights. But give credit to King. We just couldn’t hit anything.”
The Dragons have been led by a balanced scoring attack led by Sean Obi, Hunter Eggers and Pat Ryan. Obi and Eggers are averaging 18.7 points per game, while Ryan averages 13.5. Obi also averages 12.7 rebounds per game, while junior guard Matt Tate is averaging 7.5 assists, 3.2 steals and 8.8 points per game.
“I think our supporting case around Sean makes teams pay more than they did last year,’’ Scott said. “If you go too much after Obi, we have enough elsewhere. If you don’t pay enough attention to Obi, he’ll make you pay.”
The Dragons figure to see a much improved team from the Brunswick team it beat in December. The Bruins have breezed past everybody else in the league, beating its last six league opponents by double digits. Greens Farms beat Masters on Jan. 18, 54-49, but has also been spanking league rivals by double digits most of the season.
“We’re going in there nervous, and I’m sure they’re nervous to have us,’’ Scott said. “I’m sure whoever wins will be pleased with themselves.”
