Weston Racquet Club Celebrates Junior Season

Junior tennis players at the Weston Racquet Club received participation award certificates during a celebration of the USTA Junior Tennis Team season Friday.

Nearly 60 players played for the club's 8 & under, 10 & under, 12 & under, 14 & under and 18 & under teams. The top teams will compete in the state championships in August at Yale University.

The Weston Wildcats, the 10 & under team, clinched second place in the state with a 7-1 record. Their only loss was to the Shippan Tornados, a team they beat earlier in the season. Weston had 14 players on its team. "Not only are we qualifying for states, but we did it the right way, involving as many players as possible," said Angelo A. Rossetti, director of tennis at the club. They will play in the finals in the state tournament Thursday, Aug. 11.

The Weston Wonders, the club's 8 & under team, won the winter season by going 8-0. They had the largest roster of any team for the winter in their age category. They will compete in the state tournament in the finals Thursday, Aug. 11, going in as the No. 1 seed.

The 12 & under Weston Wolverine team finished sixth out of 13 teams. The 18 & under Weston Wolves team place third with a 5-3 record. The 14-and-under Weston winners finished 5-3.

"We are very happy with the team's dedication. In only my first year we have surpassed my expectations," said Javier Ferrin, the junior team coordinator and coach for the 14 and 18 teams.

Justin Campbell, the junior team coordinator and coach for the 8s, 10s and 12s teams, said, "One of our goals was not to forfeit matches and to have as much participation as possible. To qualify the majority of our teams for the state tournament was an amazing accomplishment."

In a doubles exhibition after the awards presentation, Javier Ferrin and Chanell Meijer edged Adolfo Nunez and Justin Campbell in a battle of Weston Racquet Club pros.
