Triathlete Dies Day After Being Hospitalized During Westport Race

WESTPORT, Conn. – The triathlete who was hospitalized Sunday at the Sherwood Island Sprint Triathlon died Monday at Norwalk Hospital.

Robert Hartline, 62, of Wallingford, was competing in the event as a member of the Wilton-based Team in Training. According to an obituary provided by Yalesville Funeral Home , Hartline, who died Monday, was a U.S Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War and was an accomplished runner, having competed in the Boston Marathon in the 1980s. He is survived by his wife Patricia, his mother, Dorothy and two sons. The cause of death was not included in the obituary.

Hartline was pulled in to shore by lifeguards at Sherwood Island during the half mile swim, the opening leg of the triathlon. He was conscious when he grabbed on to a kayak, but lost consciousness on the way into shore. Emergency personnel  tried to revive him on the beach before he was whisked away in an ambulance to Norwalk Hospital. The race was sponsored by Targetraining.

Hartline was competing for Team in Training, which raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  "The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and teammate, Robert Hartline,'' said Andrea Greif, a spokesperson for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. "As a participant in LLS’s Team In Training program, Robert was dedicated to our mission to find cures for blood cancers and provide help and hope to patients and their families. LLS wishes to express its deepest sympathy to Robert’s family."
