Staples Football Rolls Past Trumbull

WESTPORT, Conn. – Joey Zelkowitz ran for two first-half touchdowns and quarterback Jack Massie ran for one and passed for another Friday night as Staples football team conquered Trumbull, 38-14, in a Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference game.

The Wreckers improved to 5-0 and meet unbeaten Darien next Saturday at home at 10:30 a.m. With the loss, Trumbull falls to 2-3.

Zelkowitz scored on a 15-yard run in the first quarter to stake the Wreckers to a 7-0 led. He added an 8-yard scoring run in the second quarter, and Massie threw a 23-yard scoring pass to James Frusciante as Staples built a 21-0 lead.

Robbie Wolf added a 20-yard field goal in the second quarter for Staples, which led 24-10 at halftime. Massie scored on an 11-yard run and Jon Heil raced 54 yards for a touchdown for Staples’ final scores in the second half.

Staples and Darien bring 5-0 records into Saturday’s game. Darien edged Wilton, 35-34, in double overtime on Saturday.
