Staples Field Hockey Opens on Road

WESTPORT, Conn. – The league champion Staples High field hockey team opens the Class L tournament as the No. 9 seed and will play on the road at No. 8 Hall of West Hartford in its opening game Saturday at 9 a.m.

Staples (11-3-3-1) stunned the state’s top-ranked team, Darien High, in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference semifinals. The Wreckers went on to defeat Wilton High in the title game to win its first outright title since 1994.

Staples has a similarly tough road in the Class L tournament, where it could face No. 1 seed Cheshire High in the second round. Cheshire will play the winner of a qualifying game between Fairfield Ludlowe and Southington High. The complete field hockey bracket is available online.

Staples’ boys soccer team (12-3-4) opens as the No. 11 seed and plays its first game Friday at 2 p.m. against No. 22 Manchester. The Wreckers lost in the Class LL title game last year. They lost to Trumbull in this year’s FCIAC final. The complete boys soccer bracket is online.

The Wreckers’ girls soccer team (8-5-3) is seeded 20th, and visits New Milford on Thursday at 2 p.m. in a first-round game.  The girls bracket is online. Staples will also compete in the Class LL girls swim meet, which begins with trials Saturday at East Hartford High School. The finals are Nov. 17 at Southern Connecticut State University. The list of entries is available online.
