Tate, a point guard, was named to the All-Fairchester Athletic Association team last year and led New England Prep School players with 190 assists. He holds Greens Farms career records for assists and steals.

“"These announcements are always bittersweet for the high school coach,’’ Greens Farms coach Doug Scott said. “On one hand, we are thrilled like having a son fulfill a dream that he has worked so hard to attain. On the other hand, it's the bell announcing that we are on the last lap of having a great player and great young man in our program. By being part of the team that put that first New England Championship banner on our gym wall, we will be able to retain fond memories of Matt Tate for a long, long time."

With the graduation of Sean Obi and Hunter Eggers, Tate has become more of a scoring threat for the Dragons this year. He averaged 20.0 points per game for GFA in its first two games before Wednesday’s game at Hamden Hall. He scored a career-high 26 in a 57-44 win over Brunswick on Dec. 13.

Tate received interest from more than three dozen colleges. At Franklin & Marshall, he will be joining a team that has reached the Elite Eight in the NCAA Division III Tournament in two of the past three years.

Tate started for last year’s Green Farms team that went 24-2 and won the FAA regular season and tournament championships, and the New England Class C Tournament.

He will join former Green Farms players Obi and Eggers (both at Rice University), Pat Ryan (Elon) , Brien Comey (Kenyon College) and Dan Chase (Colby) on college rosters.
