LiCastri captured the novice 100-pound weight division, winning three matches in less than two minutes of wrestling. LiCastri pinned his opponent in the finals, Alexander Hernandez of Plainville, in 31 seconds. He won his earlier matches with pins in 33 and 45 seconds.

The 11-year-old is a fifth-grade student at Samuel Staples Elementary School. He has been wrestling for six years, and has reached the state championships four times. Sunday’s victory was his second state title.

He wrestles for a program sponsored by the Jesse Sanford Boys & Girls Club of Redding-Easton. His coach at the club is Michael Matsuoka. LiCastri’s father, Phil, is the wrestling coach at Joel Barlow High School, and his brother, Emmett, finished sixth in the 126-pound weight class at last week’s State Open.

Six other wrestlers from the club also qualified for the state tournament, and five competed.
