WESTPORT, Conn. – The Westport school bus driver suspended for allegedly making sexually explicit comments in front of students is facing felony and misdemeanor charges after he surrendered to Westport police Tuesday, police said.

Norwalk resident Daniel Florio, who has since been terminated from his position, is accused of talking about sexual acts and threatening the Coleytown Middle School students on his bus on the way to and from school on Oct. 18, police said. The students on the bus were between the ages of 11 and 13, police said.

Florio, 44, was charged with risk of injury to a child, a felony. He was also charged with threatening and breach of peace, both misdemeanors.

Florio was suspended by Dattco , the school bus company, following the afternoon bus run after numerous complaints were made. He was permanently dismissed from the company about a week ago, Dattco Chief Operating Officer Cliff Gibson said Wednesday.

Several parents of the students on the bus lashed out against school administrators , particularly the district’s transportation coordinator, for not insisting Florio be pulled from duty following the morning bus run after students allegedly made complaints upon arrival at school. As a result, one parent said the students were "terrorized" by Florio on the return trip home.

Florio’s behavior on the afternoon bus run was allegedly so distressing that many of the students got off the bus before their scheduled stops, parents told the Board of Education at its Oct. 22 meeting. Other students were said to have gotten off the bus in tears.

Florio was released after posting $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 29.
