Hurlbutt Hosts Family Fun Day

The Hurlbutt Elementary School PTA had its annual Family Fun Day fund-raiser Tuesday -- and did it by the book.

The fund-raiser included nine hours of activities and games aimed to make learning fun. The theme of this year's event was Travel the World Through Books, and was co-chaired by Jaime Lalonde, Pam Toft and Euna Filchock.

"We're well-supported by parents and teachers," Lalonde said of the event. "We had a very high turnout this year."

Lalonde said that funds raised by the book fair will go for a variety of items that are not normally funded by the schools, such as new technology, science tools and playground equipment.

"This is one of the largest fund-raisers for the PTO," Lalonde said. The book fair will last until Nov. 5, and is traditionally held the week of elections to give parents and their children an opportunity to spend time together in the community.

Activities during Family Fun Day included arts and crafts, a performance by Weston's magic genie, a workshop provided by the Gymnastics and Cheerleading Academy of Connecticut, a yoga demonstration by Blackbird Yoga, a dance party and etiquette class held by Fleur de Lis Academy, a martial arts lesson given by Doug DeBarger of Kempo Martial Arts, and hip hop dance instruction provided by the Conservatory of Dance.
