Overturned Tanker Truck Closes Overpass On 24 In Summit

A tanker truck overturned on an overpass in Summit Monday, spilling hundreds of gallons of gasoline and briefly forcing lane closures on Rt. 24.

The truck overturned on an overpass near Broad Street around 3:30 a.m. All lanes on Rt. 24 were re-opened as of about 6 a.m. but the ramp to Exit 9A -Broad Street-Millburn-Summit remained closed as of about 7 a.m., the Department of Transportation said. 

In addition, Summit officials said Broad Street is closed between the Route 24 overpass and Middle Avenue. The Broad Street entrance into Summit is completely closed. Morris Turnpike (Route 124) in Springfield is closed in both directions from Millburn Avenue to Mt. Ararat Road in Short Hills. 

Several units, including personnel from the Summit Fire Department and Union County Hazmat, were at the scene. The leak has been contained, officials in Summit said, but the cleanup is expected to last until about noon.   

Drivers were advised to avoid the area. 

There was no immediate word on injuries.
