Harrison Passes 2013-14 School Budget

HARRISON, N.Y. -- Harrison voters approved the budget for the 2013-14 school year in Tuesday's election and elected Abby Mendelsohn and Rachel Estroff to the Board of Education.

The budget passed with 1,385 votes in favor and 553 votes against. Incumbent Mendelsohn and newcomer Estroff were running unopposed for the two open seats on the board. Mendelsohn received 1,312 votes and Estroff received 857 votes.

The approved 2013-14 budget is $108,019,168, a 3.64 percent increase over last year's $104 million budget. The tax levy will increase 3.98 percent and the tax levy will increase 3.47 percent. In order to keep the budget under the state's tax cap levy, the district was forced to cut $2.25 million from the budget in non-program spending. One or two teachers may be laid off if the budget passes.
