WESTPORT, Conn. -- Westport's First Selectman Jim Marpe has issued the following message about Martin Luther King Jr.

To the editor:

Fifty years ago, in his speech delivered at the 1963 March on Washington, Martin Luther King dared to share his compelling personal aspiration for our country, challenging us all to remove the barriers that divide Americans from one another and assure equality of opportunity for all, not just some.

Even children are familiar with the “dream” of fairness, justice and connectedness which he espoused for our children and their future. Adults are equally familiar with his “content of their character” quote and concept.

As we celebrate Dr. King’s life this weekend, it is also a time for us to reflect upon one of his lesser known quotes, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?’ ”

This weekend, the Town of Westport celebrates the efforts of our citizens and organizations which continue to take that question to heart and act upon it.

We are especially proud of the work of TEAM Westport, the town’s committee focused on diversity, which in conjunction with a host of partnering organizations and individuals is celebrating 10 years Together Effectively Achieving Multiculturalism.

From the effective work of our social, civic and faith-based organizations to our dedicated civil servants to the committed engagement of many individuals, we applaud all Westporters who are working to make Dr. King's vision a reality.
