WESTON, Conn. – Occupy Weston outlined plans to overturn the Citizens United Supreme Court decision at its meeting Saturday.

The group, which identified the issue as the first it wanted to pursue after forming in November, said it will present the case to the Weston Board of Selectmen and ask it to enact a resolution calling for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would prohibit corporations from maintaining the right to practice unrestricted political spending.

Bob Gardner, a member of Occupy Weston, said, “If we don’t succeed, the country won’t survive. It’s that serious.”

He said eight Connecticut towns already have passed resolutions supporting an amendment opposing the Citizens United ruling, including Ledyard, which issued a resolution supporting an amendment that would prohibit spending money to influence elections to be considered speech under the First Amendment.

Gardner also said the group will work with state legislators on the measure and collaborate with other Occupy movements and activist organizations.

A group of Occupy Weston members working on the Citizens United issue will meet at 10 a.m. Jan. 19 at the Weston Public Library. Occupy Weston’s next meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. Feb. 9 at the library.
