Himes Pens Op-Ed On Walking Out Of Moment Of Silence

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- It’s time for action, not empty gestures, said U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, explaining why he walked out Tuesday during a “moment of silence” for victims of the Orlando nightclub shootings.

Himes, in an op-ed piece for The Washington Post, said he is sick of politicians responding to the latest gun-violence tragedy by putting on their “most serious faces” for 10 seconds of silence, then moving on to other matters.

According to his Washington Post piece, lawmakers should respond by screaming the names of the 49 victims and by inviting their loved ones to the Capitol to speak about their pain.

It’s policy, not silence, that can bring gun violence and acts of terrorism to an end, Himes wrote in The Washington Post piece.

Among the legislation he referred to were: universal background checks and limits on the kinds of weapons civilians can own.

Himes, a Democrat and businessman, has served Connecticut's 4th Congressional District since 2009.
