WESTPORT, Conn. -- A Westport woman was charged with driving under the influence after police said she drove off the road and hit a utility pole this weekend.

At around 2 a.m. on Saturday, Oct, 21, police were dispatched to the area of Roseville Road and Pine Tree Drive in Westport on a report of a motor vehicle accident. Officers located a car off to the side of the road with heavy front end damage, and about 20 yards away a utility pole was broken in half and leaning against a tree, police said.

The driver, identified as 37-year-old Renata Wanderley-Diffley of Westport, declined medical treatment, police said. Officers could detect an odor of alcohol on her breath and attempted to administer a field sobriety test, which she refused, according to police.

After being advised that she was being placed under arrest, Wanderley-Diffley did not comply with three requests to place her hands behind her back, according to police. She was taken into custody and brought to headquarters, where she refused to submit to a breathalyzer or urine test, according to police.

Wanderley-Diffley was charged with operating under the influence, failure to drive in the proper lane and interfering with an officer. She was released on a $500 bond and will appear in court on Oct. 31.
