WESTPORT, Conn. -- A Stamford man claiming to be a police officer was charged with sexually assaulting a woman in Westport, according to police.

On Aug. 8, a woman came to the Westport Police Department to report that she had been sexually assaulted the previous day. She said that the assault had taken place at the Westport Inn by a man she was having an online relationship with, police said.

The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Ashwin Mathur of Stamford, told the woman that he was a police officer, and wore a badge the night of the incident when he arrived to pick the woman up, according to police.

Detectives interviewed both Mathur and the woman, and a warrant was issued for his arrest based on information learned from the interviews, police said. On Thursday, Sept. 14 his car was stopped by a Stamford police officer and he was taken into custody.

He was transported to Westport police headquarters, where he was charged with third-degree sexual assault, unlawful restrain and impersonating a police officer. He was released on a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 27.
