Around 2:45 a.m., a Westport officer observed Daniel Bennewitz, 30, of Old South Road, speeding on Maple Avenue and began to follow him, police said. Bennewitz ran through several stop signs before crashing the car, police said.
Though he was uninjured, officers smelled a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, police said. Bennewitz failed field sobriety tests and refused a breath test, according to police reports.
He was charged with operating under the influence, disobeying the signal of an officer and reckless driving.
He posted $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on March 8.
