At around 2 p.m. Norwalk Police Marine Unit Sergeant Peter LaPak and Marine Unit Officer Richard Delallo were patrolling the area of Green Ledge Lighthouse when they saw a man in the water and a sailboat traveling in circles. The man had sustained a head injury and was in obvious distress, police said.
As the officers approached, they threw the man a life ring, but he was unable to grab it. His head then began going underwater.
Delallo went into the water, secured the now-exhausted man and brought him back to the police boat. A passerby also went in and assisted Delallo and LePak with getting the man into the boat.
The man was taken to the Norwalk Fire Boat, which transported him to Cove Marina and a waiting Norwalk Hospital ambulance.
LePak and Delallo were then able to secure the sailboat, which had a passenger on board. The passenger told the officers that the man had been struck in the head by a boom, which had launched him into the water. The passenger did not sustain any injuries.
