WESTPORT, Conn. — A homeless man from New York City who was arrested Friday after he was seen breaking into a car in Westport is now facing even more charges, Westport police said Monday.

At 4:30 a.m. Friday, a Woodside Avenue homeowner confronted a man later identified as Darius McCallop, 32, who was breaking into his car, police said.

McCallop fled toward Kings Highway North, police said.

Officers dispatched to the scene set up a perimeter and eventually found McCallop holed up in a locked common laundry room on Kings Highway North, police said. He was taken into custody without incident, police said.

McCallop was charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree burglary from a motor vehicle, third-degree criminal mischief and interfering with an officer, police said.

He was also charged with fugitive from justice because he had an active, extraditable violation of probation warrant out of the New York City Department of Correction. The original charge in that case was third-degree robbery.

McCallop was held on $25,000 bond.

During the police investigation, Westport detectives linked the merchandise found in McCallop’s backpack to a vehicle burglary in the area, police said.

An additional arrest was made charging McCallop with fourth-degree larceny and third-degree burglary, police said.

He was due in Norwalk Superior Court on Monday, Aug. 14.
