The accident occurred at approximately 2:50 a.m. on the northbound side of the highway between exits 17 and 18, Assistant Fire Chief Larry Conklin said. One of the vehicles involved, a Ford Escape, sustained major front-end damage, Conklin said.

The driver and sole occupant of the Ford was transported to Norwalk Hospital by Westport EMS for further evaluation, said Conklin. The other two drivers were not injured.

The accident shut down the middle and left lanes of the highway until the scene was cleared.

“Always remember that bridges and overpasses freeze over before the regular roadway,” Conklin said.
