Gregory R. LaValla, 51, Longtime Westport Resident

WESTPORT, Conn. - Gregory R. LaValla, a longtime Westport resident, died Tuesday, Sept. 23. He was 51.

LaValla was born Dec. 27, 1962, in Stamford, to Ralph and Judith (Schneider) LaValla. He played Westport PAL football until he attended Staples where he was a wrestler and graduated in 1980. He was a volunteer of the Westport PAL and has coached PAL football for the past 22 years and PAL basketball for the past five years. He was on the board of directors of PAL Football and was a part of Minuteman Race, the Special Olympics, PAL Fireworks and he worked the PAL booth at the Westport Italian Festival for many years in Westport. He also volunteered with the Big Brother program in Bridgeport.

LaValla is survived by his parents; brothers, Mario LaValla of Bridgeport, George LaValla of Winsted and Richard Lavalla (Jodi) of Greenville, S.C.; seven nieces and nephews; a grand niece and two grand nephews; and the love of his life, Joannie Fuss Pica of Wilton.

A memorial service in honor of Greg will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 at Compo Beach in Westport. Please bring chairs.
