Charlton was former magistrate judge in Norwalk and Bridgeport.

He was born April 29, 1926, in Fitchburg, Mass., to Kathleen and Francis Charlton. He graduated from St. Bernard's High School in Fitchburg, Mass., and joined the Navy at the age of 17.

Under the G.I. Bill, Charlton graduated from Holy Cross College in 1948. He received a law degree from Georgetown University in 1952. He was married to Jay Charlton for 53 years.

Charlton worked as an attorney for more than 50 years, practicing law in Massachusetts, New York and Connecticut. His family said that he had a quick wit and loved entertaining his family and friends with his Irish tenor voice.

He could often be seen sitting in his favorite chair, reading the daily papers while watching sports. He supported New England teams and women's sports. He also enjoyed playing golf at Longshore in Westport and was proud of shooting two holes-in-one.

Charlton is survived by his wife; their three children, Craig Charlton, of Chicago, Susan Wallace, of Madison, Conn., and Kathy Lee, of Fairfield; a daughter, Sally Barnes, of Montana; six grandchildren; and a sister, Joan Laverty, of Norwood, Mass.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at St. Luke's Church in Westport. Leo P. Gallagher and Sons Funeral Home in Stamford is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kathy Lee, 111 Euclid Ave., Fairfield, CT 06825, for a Frank Charlton Memorial Bench at Longshore, or the ALS Recovery Fund, One Grove Isle Drive, Coconut Grove, FL 33133.
