Allen A. Raymond, 90, Lifelong Westport Resident

WESTPORT, Conn. - Allen A. Raymond, lifelong Westport resident, died May 1. He was 90.

Raymond was born in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1923, to Marietta Persch and Allen A. Raymond Sr. He graduated from Nichols School in Buffalo in 1941 and from the University of Michigan, where he obtained an engineering degree in 1945. He was the youngest president of the Westport YMCA Board of Directors, was president for an unprecedented two terms of the Westport Public Library, and was the moderator of the Greens Farms Congregational Church.

He was moderator of the RTM and was a member of the Board of Education from 1965 through 1968, serving as school board president for 1967 to 1968. He served for over 60 years as president of the Compo Cove Association.

A member of the Westport Historical Society, he was also Westport's official Municipal Historian. He was the founder of the Association of Connecticut Municipal Historians. He was also a member of the Friends of Sherwood Island and served on its Sherwood Island Mill Pond Committee. He was a three-time past president of the Norwalk Symphony.

He worked in publishing all of his career. His positions included Advertising Sales manager at McCall's Magazine and president and publisher of Educational Publishing Co., a subsidiary of Macmillan Inc. In 1970, he co-founded, with Patricia Broderick, a magazine for elementary school teachers, Teaching K-8 Magazine. About midpoint in the 37-year publication history of that magazine, he sold it to Highlights for Children.

Raymond is survived by his children, Allen, III (Bernadette Golden) of New London, Deborah Eskra (James) of Mystic, Peter (Dorothy) of Loveland, Colo., Cynthia Campbell (Robert) of Oxford, and David (Therese Raymond-Cline) of Fairfield; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and partner, Patricia Broderick of Darien. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara Butler.

There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Greens Farms Congregational Church, 71 Hillandale Road, Westport.
