O’Grady, a Weston resident, submitted his letter of resignation to Chief Judge Paul J. Knierim, the Probate Court administrator, last Wednesday. Copies of his letter were also sent to Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff, Weston First Selectman Gayle Weinstein, and the chairmen of Westport’s and Weston’s Democratic Town Committees and Republican Town Committees.

“My health has deteriorated quite significantly and I am no longer able to fulfill my responsibilities,” O’Grady wrote in the letter to Westport and Weston officials. “It has been an honor to assist the residents of both towns.”

O’Grady, a Democrat, was first elected in 1999. He was most recently re-elected in 2010. He has been on medical leave since Aug. 2011.

"It is with deep regret that I learn of Judge O’Grady’s intention to resign," Joseloff said in a statement. "He has served the residents of Westport and Weston not only with distinction, but with genuine compassion as he went about his official duties. I wish him well as he battles his health issues.”
