WESTPORT, Conn. The Staples High School boys tennis team defeated New Canaan on Thursday, 5-2, to secure the No. 2 seed for next weeks Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference playoffs.
Staples finished the regular season 17-1, and 15-1 in the conference. Singles winners against New Canaan included Jake Hirschberg at first singles, Connor Mitnick at No. 4 and Jack Reardon at No. 5.
Steve Thomson and Zack Levin won at first doubles, while Evan Davis and Baxter Stein won at No. 2 doubles.
Staples hosts seventh-seeded Fairfield Ludlowe in Mondays quarterfinals. The winners advance to the semifinals Tuesday, and the championship match is scheduled for Thursday at Wilton.
