A sewer main has collapsed and is causing major traffic delays on the road, which is also Route 1, according to Westport police.

Crews are responding to repair the collapsed pipe, but it will be a lengthy processes, authorities said.

"For the foreseeable future only one eastbound and one westbound lane will be open," Chief of Police Dale Call said in a press release. "People travelling in that area should expect traffic delays."

Westport police are suggesting travelers plan alternate routes listing:

  • South Compo Road to Greens Farms Road to Hills Point Rd
  • The Sherwood Island Connector
  • North Compo Road to Cross Highway to Roseville Road.

The collapse occurred at about 9:45 a.m.
