New Westport Business Gets Spinning

Hop on a bike and go for a joy ride this summer with Westport resident Rhodie Lorenz, co-founder of Westport's newest exercise spot — JoyRide Cycling Studio .

The brainchild of Lorenz and fellow Westporters Amy Hochhauser and Debbie Katz, JoyRide officially celebrated its grand opening Tuesday after being open for a week.

"This is the first dedicated spinning studio in Westport," said Lorenz, head instructor at JoyRide. "Gyms offer spinning classes, but they are focused on so many different things, they don't pay attention to details. We're just spinning, so we pay attention to all the details, from lighting, sound, ventilation, having quality bikes, quality instructors and making sure the bikes are consistently serviced."

The 4,100-square-foot space features a stadium-style-tiered cycling studio outfitted with 26 Schwinn AC Sport bikes. Down the road Katz said they hope to add more bikes. The space has capacity for about 40.

Rhodie said several qualities make JoyRide unique, including that there are no membership fees. Instead, riders can pay as they go, one class at a time, or buy class packages of 10, 20 or 50. Riders can also sign up for a class a week in advance and even reserve a specific bike.

To provide a level of consistency, Rhodie said all seven instructors follow the same method — just in case a rider isn't able to book a class with the same instructor every time. One more thing that makes JoyRide stand out is that riders can get a total body workout in 50 minutes.

"During the last 10 minutes of a class, riders use a body bar to work their upper body," said Amy, noting that the bars are available in 2 and 4 pounds. "People can get all their fitness taken care of in one place."

Morning and evening classes are available. In about two weeks, JoyRide will also offer private and group Pilates classes, which Rhodie said complements spinning.
