Commuters were thrown a major curve ball Wednesday after a power outage on the New Haven Line severely disrupted service between Stamford and Grand Central Terminal. It may take weeks for power to be fully restored, and Gov. Dannel Malloy urged Metro-North to refund commuters for the disruption of service. 

Staples High School was among the 286 schools across the country recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a 2013 Blue Ribbon School.

In other Staples news, nine seniors have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Also, senior Kelsey Shockey was recently National Society of High School Scholars for her academic achievement.

The Board of Education on Monday backed a project to install higher security interior door locks throughout all of the town's schools.

The Westport Fire Department on Thursday welcomed back Firefighter Pete Nichio, who recently returned from a yearlong military deployment in Afghanistan.

Westport resident David Schachne recently published a book on his 2004 hiking excursion in The Himalayas.
