WESTPORT, Conn. -- The all-new Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Westport will launch its inaugural season in the renovated facility with a free concert by Jose Feliciano on Sunday, July 20.
Tickets will be available online and at the Levitt Pavilion office at 260 S. Compo Road on Tuesday, July 8.
Feliciano is acclaimed by critics around the world as The Greatest Living Guitarist." Local resident Feliciano has donated his performance fee in order to support the ongoing Campaign for a New Levitt Pavilion, which will announce its final phase that same day.
The newly graded and lush lawn will officially open to the public at 5 p.m., a ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. and Feliciano takes the stage at 7 p.m.
The Friends of the Levitt Pavilion and the town of Westport broke ground on the new pavilion last October and moved quickly through the process of construction. This is the first full renovation of the pavilion since it was first built.
Nearly $7 million worth of work has been completed in the past eight months. The changes to the lawn and the surrounding area are significant, the Friends say.
The new Hospitality Center holds the concession stand and box office. The lawn is no longer tiered but sloped with fewer potholes in the grass.
During regular nonticketed concerts, there will be room for 1,700 people in picnic-style layout. During seated ticketed events, 2,400 people will be able to sit down.
The stage was almost completely torn down to make way for a more state-of-the-art structure, with backstage areas for performers and a more high-tech sound system.
The stage, the Friends hope, will become an instantly recognizable landmark for Westport with its metal structure and cover that mimics the sails of the Sydney Opera House.
The group has also completed a $1.1 million renovation of the riverwalk area around the pavilion.
