Irene Brings Outages, Flooding to Westport

WESTPORT, Conn. – [UPDATED 3:45 p.m.] As Tropical Storm Irene moves through the region, about 75 percent of Westport is without power. As of 3:45 p.m., Connecticut Light & Power reported 9,321 outages in town.

Several roads along the coast and Saugatuck River have flooded. In a noon press conference, Gov. Dannel Malloy said 8.3 inches of rain fell in the western part of the state. The rain has appeared to subsided, but Malloy warned of continuing high winds throughout the afternoon.

Several roads in town are closed due to flooding or fallen trees. Power has been shut off to Main Street and in Saugatuck Shores, Deputy Fire Chief Jon Gottfried said, due to flooding. So far, there have been no reported injuries.
