Driver Hospitalized After Westport Rollover

WESTPORT, Conn. – The driver of a minivan was hospitalized with serious injuries after his vehicle rolled over in Westport near the Wilton border Tuesday afternoon, Assistant Fire Chief William Dingee reported.

The accident happened shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Wilton Road between Newtown Turnpike and the Wilton town line. The minivan reportedly struck the back of a tractor-trailer, veered across the oncoming lane and went over a stone wall, causing it to roll over and land on its roof, Dingee said.

The driver of the minivan was trapped inside, hanging by his seatbelt. Firefighters had to use the "jaws of life" to rescue him. He was taken to the hospital by Westport EMS.

The minivan was towed, and spilled fluids were cleaned up by firefighters. The tractor-trailer sustained only minor damage and was able to drive away, Dingee said.

The roadway was closed until 4 p.m.
