WESTPORT, Conn. – More than 1,000 power outages remained in Westport on Monday, exactly one week after Hurricane Sandy pounded the state.

As of 3:20 p.m. Monday, Connecticut Light & Power reported 1,035 outages in Westport, which is about 8 percent of town. Most of the remaining outages were in the northeast part of the state, Fire Inspector Nate Gibbons said in a Monday afternoon broadcast from the Emergency Operations Center.

CL&P crews, Gibbons said, are focusing efforts in the following areas: Partrick Road, Cranberry Road, North Avenue, Roseville Road, Cross Highway and Highpoint Road. Crews are also working in the Greens Farms area as well as in the southwest corner of town off Saugatuck Avenue and its side streets, Gibbons said.

“As this restoration continues, don’t be surprised if your power comes back and then goes out again,” he said. “Crews often have to de-energize circuits for testing before returning side roads to service. Don’t worry, these test outages are short term.”

As the town continues to recover from Sandy, a nor’easter is on the horizon for Wednesday into Thursday. Forecasts predict this storm will produce heavy rains and winds along the shore of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts of 45 to 60 mph, Gibbons said.

Coastal flooding is also a risk, he said.

“This is not a superstorm but more of a classic New England nor’easter that we’ve all weathered before. However, our homes, roads, and yes, power lines, have just been through the Mixmaster,” Gibbons said. “We remain vulnerable, to say the least, so please start thinking about your preparations now.”
