Boat on Rocks Leads to DUI Arrest

Drinking and driving is just as bad an idea behind the helm of a boat as it is behind the wheel of car. Just ask Matthew Forelli of Darien.

Forelli, 45, of 10 Meadowbrook Road, was arrested Friday shortly after 10 p.m. at Compo Beach when police, fire and EMS answered a call of a boat on the rocks of the jetty with two people aboard.

After attending to the passengers, responders detected a strong smell of alcohol on Forelli's breath.

Neither Forelli nor his passenger was hurt, but the 25-foot center console boat was heavily damaged in the bow and engine areas. The boat was removed from the rocks by the Westport Police Marine Division and towed to Compo Marina.

Forelli was charged with boating under the influence. He was released on a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Aug, 23.
