The event will be Saturday, May 3, from 1-4 p.m. at Wakeman Town Farm at 134 Cross Highway. The event is free, but donations will be accepted.
Legendary caller Bill Fischer is coming to town to lead the maypole dance. His wife, Mickey Koth, will be playing fiddle, joined by Kendall Alderman on guitar and Lydia Smith on drums. The maypole dance is scheduled for 3 p.m.
The maypole is Wakeman's featured event of a full weekend of activities for Westport's Green Day, a townwide Earth Day celebration. The farm will have sheep shearing, wool spinning, farm tours, a square-foot garden workshop, a drum circle, homemade chili and "crazy bread" by WTF chef Craig, and more.
Here is the event schedule:
- 1- 2:15 p.m.: Farm tours, see the gardens and meet the many farm animals; square-foot garden workshop; children's activities and games; electric vehicles and Astrum Solar.
- 2:15-2:45 p.m.: Sheep shearing, goat grooming, and wool spinning.
- 2:45-3:15 p.m.: Greenhouse dedication ceremony.
- 3:15-4 p.m.: The Big Event: Traditional maypole dance and drum circle.
Dress colorfully and festively if you wish, keeping in mind some activities involve dirt.
