To the Editor:

Avi Kaner, candidate for second selectman, has done a great job in driving the fiscal reforms that have been long needed in Westport. Under his leadership as the chairman of the Board of Finance, the town has made significant progress. He has made reforms to deal with the complex issues regarding the town’s costly pension and health and benefit programs.

Much work remains to be done and important labor and pension contract negotiations are coming up that have potential long-term future cost impacts on the town and our taxes.

We need serious, experienced leaders with real business skills to lead us through the future fiscal challenges and to make sure that the long-term decisions made are the right ones. In my opinion, Avi Kaner, along with his running mate first selectman candidate Jim Marpe, are the team that has the required strong business and public experience and knows what it is doing.

Westporters need to look beyond party identification in this election and choose the leaders that are best going to manage the town and protect the investment we all have in it. That team is without a doubt Jim Marpe and Avi Kaner, and I urge you to vote yourself a favor by voting for them on Nov. 5.
