Westport Joins One Billion Rising To Support Women Survivors Of Violence

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Westport joined the worldwide movement known as One Billion Rising For Justice.

One Billion Rising For Justice is an initiative for women survivors of violence to gather and break the silence. On Feb. 14, Valentine's Day, Westport joined the worldwide the movement spearheaded by Eve Ensler, the award-winning playwright, creator of "The Vagina Monologues" and founder of V-Day.

The Westport Domestic Violence Task Force joined Westport police, department of human services and members of other groups in town in front of town hall and rang bells, "making noise as a part of one billion people all over the world standing together against relationship abuse - forcing the world to take notice," Elizabeth Marks Juviler, chairwoman of the task force, said.

"The event was only a small part of the day but the potential to increase awareness and support for women in our area who are being or have been abused is enormous," Marks Juviler said.
