Grace's Hill Farm, as the garden is known, will contain a variety of vegetables, including peas, beans, carrots and tomatoes. The fresh produce will be given to Operation Hope and other area food pantries.
The Boy Scouts have devoted 10 days of work and nearly 225 combined hours to build the garden, including erecting deer-proof fences, framing out the beds and filling them with soil, installing an irrigation system, and cultivating the grounds, a task made more challenging by New England's famous stony soil.
The garden will be maintained with the help of children and adults from Ability Beyond, a Connecticut-based organization that helps people with disabilities.
David Wisdom, a member of Our Saviour, along with 19 of his fellow troop members from Westport, worked on the project to qualify for Eagle Scout honors. They were mentored by Eric Frisk, another Our Saviour member who is chief gardener of Fairfield’s Community Garden at Drew Park, which has been growing vegetables to feed the hungry for the last 19 years.
“Grace’s Hill Farm is an extension of our work at Drew Park, and provides another way for us to grow fresh produce to help feed the hungry of Fairfield County,” said Frisk. “It also provides a valuable learning and service experience for the Boy Scouts and for people with autism spectrum disorders that are helped by Ability Beyond. We are grateful to Our Saviour’s for allowing us to use church property for this important community ministry.”
