Weston, Ask Ferrara About Youth Issues

Do you have questions about what your teen is doing? Do you need advice about bullying in school? Kristin Ferrara has the answers. Ferrara, the Weston youth services director, will be writing a column each Thursday addressing questions from young people and parents in Weston. To ask a question, go to the Weston Youth Services website. All questions will be submitted anonymously or with a name and email address.

Here's some details about Kristin: She was born and raised in Fairfield and graduated from Fordham University in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in social science and communications. Ferrara has a master's degree from Fairfield University in mental health counseling. She has been in Weston as the director of youth services for almost three years.

Weston Youth Services works with youth from birth to age 18, their families and the schools as well as the rest of the community. The staff makes referrals for counseling to outside agencies if a student or family needs assistance beyond what is provided. They also do case management, working with the town social worker, for families in need whether financially or otherwise.

Youth Services offers parent programs on a variety of topics, driven by community interest. In the past, those topics have included underage drinking, Internet safety, bullying and healthy relationships. Ferrara works closely with town and local organizations, including ADAP, the Weston Domestic Violence Task Force and the Fairfield County Alliance to Prevent Substance Abuse.

Ferrara is an adviser to the Weston High School Teen Peaceworks chapter, a teen group that educates its peers about teen dating violence and healthy relationships. Weston Youth Services is also involved in the Weston High School pre-prom assembly.

Ferrara said she likes to maintain an open door policy. "I am happy to meet with youth and families in town about anything and am happy to help out on various projects and ideas."
