Original 'Mad Man' To Speak To Y’s Men of Westport/Weston

WESTPORT, Conn. — Ken Roman joined Oglivy & Mather as the "Mad Men" era began. He will talk to Y’s Men of Westport/Weston about those days, the agency, and its legendary leader, David Ogilvy.

Roman, former CEO of Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide, will be the Y’s Men’s featured speaker at its Oct. 1 meeting at the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road E., Westport.

Roman will talk about advertising back in the day. Graduating from Dartmouth in 1952, he sought a job as newspaper reporter, learned what that job paid and instead became a advertising writer for a chemical company.

After 10 years of “succeeding at dumb jobs,” he moved from the “fringe” to the center, an agency then named Ogilvy Benson & Mather, to start over “at the very bottom.”

Roman joined as “the world's oldest assistant account executive,” a position he called “about as low on the totem pole as you can get.” After 27 years there, he retired as the agency’s chairman and CEO.

Even in retirement (if that’s what he’s really doing), Roman remains a journalist. He wrote the first biography of David Ogilvy, "The King of Madison Avenue: David Ogilvy and the Making of Modern Advertising," and is the co-author of two business classics, "How to Advertise" and "Writing That Works."

Some have suggested David Ogilvy was the original "Mad Man." Perhaps Roman will offer his insights into the theory.

The Y's Men of Westport/Weston is an organization of retired and semi-retired men with a continued interest in activity, fellowship, learning and community service.
