Monroe Counts Its Blessings With New Creche On Town Green

MONROE, Conn. — Monroe area residents gathered Saturday for a holy celebration of the Christmas season as the St. John XXIII Council 5987 of the Knights of Columbus met on the Monroe Town Green for a blessing of a new creche.

"I'm very grateful to the Town of Monroe and the Knights of Columbus for organizing today's event, and bringing for the first time to Monroe, this nativity scene to our Green," Monsignor Darius Zielonka, Pastor at St. Jude's Parish in Monroe, told Daily Voice.

"I believe it's a great sign of not only Christmas, but also of bringing into our town all the surrounding Christian communities. ... I also hope it's a reminder to everyone that we work together to create common good and peace and harmony in the Town of Monroe," he said.

A creche, or nativity scene, includes sculptures representing the scene of the birth of Jesus.

It is the first creche on the Town Green in recent memory, said Kevin Donovan, of the St. John XXIII Council 5987, who has lived in Monroe for over 25 years.
