Even if you already bought your Dad some shiny new golf balls or tickets to a Yankees game for Father's Day or even if you forgot, it's not too late to get him a little something extra for all that he has done for you. And what if it was free? Head to the Apple Barn at Aspectuck Valley Orchards at 720 Black Rock Turnpike.
Just show up and you can get a tomato plant to give to your Dad. The tomatoes are starting to ripen on the vine so you'll have some delicious juicy tomatoes to throw into a salad or on top of a cheeseburger, just in time for the hottest days of summer.[breakhere]
"For Mother's Day we always give a flower and we didn't want to leave out the Dads," said Emily Zimmerman, who works at the orchard. The orchard has been giving away free tomato plants for years. While she is not certain just how many plants they give away each year, she estimates it is "a lot."
"It's kind of nice," she said, adding that the Dads always seem greatful and really surprised to receive the gift.
