Customers Reap as Candee Sows

From a distance, Fred Candee looks so relaxed riding his tractor across the fields of Candee Farm, hat pulled over his eyes, that you might almost think he’s asleep. The veteran farmer knows his land so well he could probably navigate it in his sleep, which is understandable: He and his family have worked hard plowing and tending  these vegetable fields for 35 years.

The 52-acre family-owned farm on Morehouse Road is one of the town’s biggest and best for pick-your-own produce. Its bounty includes cucumbers the size of eggplants, beautifully ripe tomatoes, zucchini, squash and sweet corn, and Candee’s pride, the Hungarian peppers that smell so good you can whiff them from a distance.

Kim Currie visited the farm to pick fresh cucumbers and give support to local growers. "It tastes better and you know it's fresh and organic," she said.

Candee said picking your own gives you the benefits of fresh  produce that is cheaper than the pre-picked vegetables available in other farm stores. He says eating local is the way to go – especially at his farm.

“Number one, it’s good for you, you can’t get it any fresher and it helps me pay the taxes,” he said.

Candee Farm is located at 456 Morehouse Road in Easton. Call (203) 268-5623 for more information.
