McBride is an author, musician and screenwriter. He wrote the American classic "The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother," a narrative about his mother that topped bestseller lists for more than two years. His novel "The Good Lord Bird," about American revolutionary John Brown, was the winner of the 2013 National Book Award for Fiction.

"Miracle at St. Anna" is a tale of courage and redemption inspired by a little-known event in Italy during World War II. McBride’s newest book, "Kill ‘Em and Leave: Searching for the Real James Brown," is an authorized biography of James Brown, due for release in March.

A graduate of Oberlin College and the Columbia School of Journalism, McBride has written for The Boston Globe, People and The Washington Post. Also an award-winning composer and saxophonist, McBride has written songs for Anita Baker, Grover Washington Jr. and Gary Burton, as well as for the PBS character Barney.
