Sonsoem decided not to change the fateful mistake.
“There is meaning in ‘kit,’” Sonsoem said, adding it's an acronym. “It means ‘keep in touch.’ So I want people to think of us when they want to go out to lunch or dinner.”
After a soft launch about two months ago, Sonsoem and co-owner Kamol Uttarapas celebrated their official grand opening Thursday, welcoming First Selectman Michael Tetreau, Community and Economic Development Director Mark Barnhart and Chamber of Commerce President Beverly Balaz to a brief ribbon cutting at their Post Road storefront.
“I love this town,” said Sonsoem, a New Haven resident who recently earned her MBA at the University of New Haven. “I came to town to see which space is good for me.”
The location near the Bridgeport border has been the short-lived home to another Thai restaurant and, before that, a Cambodian place, but Sonsoem believes she has the recipe for success.
She also has an extended support system, including Uttarrapas and her best friend, Benjawan Warner, a talented artist who created a colorful mural of Wat Arun, a landmark temple in Bangkok, on the cozy restaurant’s rear wall.
Thai Kit’s extensive menu boasts many Thai favorites, including Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles, as well as spicy salads, noodle and fried rice dishes, soups and curries. Lime Chili Chicken and Lemongrass Chicken have proved popular in the opening weeks, Sonsoem said.
The menu also features several desserts and a selection of bubble tea flavors, as well as a three-course lunch for under $10.
Thai Kit, located at 222C Post Road, is open for lunch and dinner every day but Monday. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday. It’s open noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 9:30 p.m on Sunday.
Thai Kit also offers catering and take-out service with free delivery within a five-mile radius.
