WESTPORT, Conn. — Five new businesses have opened in downtown Westport so far this year and more are on the horizon.

To Westport developer David Waldman, president of David Adam Realty, this early boom in activity is a clear sign that downtown Westport is a shopping and dining destination.

“Westport has one of the strongest, if not the strongest retail street in Connecticut, and in all aspects is the envy of all other towns,” he said. “With new projects on the board, cultural venues like the Levitt, the library, the Playhouse and the Westport Arts Center, as well as a gorgeous river and great shopping and dining, it's hard not to want to be part of our exciting town.”

Steven Alan , a men’s and women’s clothing store, opened last Friday in the new commercial building at 100 Post Road E. A day earlier, Walin & Wolff , a women’s shoe, handbag and accessories boutique, debuted at 30 Post Road E.

The Steven Alan store joined Paper Source, a stationery chain that opened at 100 Post Road E. in January . Across the street at 111 Post Road is Pinkberry Frozen Yogurt, which also opened last month. Also new is EATalia , an Italian restaurant and pizzeria that opened after the new year at 143 Post Road E.

“Downtown is off to a strong start so far, and it’s only going to get better,” said Waldman. “There are some exciting businesses opening up this year that will further enhance downtown as a whole.”

Vince , a designer clothing store for men and women, is set to open this spring on Main Street.

Joie , a store that sells women’s clothing, shoes and accessories, will open at 48 Post Road E., the former home of Lucy’s. That store is expected to open in April or May, said Sharon Maddern, director of sales and leasing at David Adam Realty.

Residents should also be on the lookout for the arrival of Brandy Melville , a clothing boutique that appeals to teens and young women, said Maddern. This boutique will open at 142 Main St. after Oddz, the current tenant, relocates to Post Road East on March 1.

At least two new restaurants are also expected to open this year. One is slated to open in the lower level at 125 Main St. by late spring or early summer, Waldman said.

The other — Post 154 —  is in the works at the former Post Office branch at 154 Post Road E. and may be open by summer, Maddern said.

"This is going to be a beautiful, cutting edge restaurant," she said. "There's going to be  bar, a main dining room, event space on the lower level and an outdoor patio."
