Breaking News: Passenger From Sandy Hook Arrested At Bradley After Creating Disturbance On Flight, Police Say

Weston Soccer League Kicks Back to the Community

WESTON, Conn. – For those playing in the Weston Adult Soccer League, it's about more than kicking a ball into a net.

When a player broke his leg this year and the Weston EMS responded, the team responded by donating an AED device.

One player with cancer was given a laptop from the team. And another who skied into a tree was given a Kindle. The group also raised $5,000 for a St. Baldrick's event.

The group raises money and donates to multiple causes – including fixing up the town's equipment. A new fence and two new soccer nets were donated to the turf field as well as a sound system. Uniforms were also purchased for a Bridgeport youth soccer team.

"We try to help our own. We try to be a good neighbor to the fields we use and the town supports our programs. I couldn't imagine a better place to be than Weston," said Jon Pressman, who founded the adult soccer club seven years ago.

Pressman started the club even though he had never played soccer. His kids were doing soccer, and he wanted a way to get adults together. The club was born and grew considerably over the years. It plays year-round and includes college and high school students during the summer. The players range in age from 18 to 60.

"There are 150 guys playing over 12 months – 125 played soccer and 25 were just picking it up," said Pressman. "It's so inclusive. You can be the worst player on the field and, if you're open, they'll pass it to you."

The group has formed a social network, as well, connecting young professionals with career opportunities – including sending one player to China for a job.

"There are opportunities for kids who play, and we do try to help them," said Pressman. "A kid who chases a ball into the woods is a good kid. If I can help, I will."
