WESTPORT, Conn. – Staples freshman Hannah DeBalsi finished third in the 2-mile event and set a national freshman record in the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina.
The record run by DeBalsi was part of an outstanding array of races for the athletes from Westport. Senior Henry Wynne won the mile championship. The boys 4 x 800 relay finished third, and the girls distance medley relay finished third. Staples also set a school record in the girls 4 x 1 mile relay.
DeBalsi was the linchpin to the Staples girls team. She ran with the leaders the whole way, cruising past the mile mark in 5:07.38. DeBalsi led with two laps to go before Wesley Frazier took control on the final lap. Frazier, who won three races on the weekend, ran 10:07.35 while Annie Heffernan was second in 10:13.58.
The girls distance medley included Tyler Scanlin, Erica Hefnawy, Emily Troelstra and Scanlin, who combined to run 11:53.61. DeBalsi ran a 4:48.67 anchor leg for 1,600 meters, the fastest anchor leg in the field.
The Staples High 4 x 800 team finished third with Peter Elkind, Pat Nolan, Walker Marsh and Wynne. They ran 7:42.11 to set a school record.
The final school record came from the girls 4 x 1-mile relay, which finished 32nd. Staples’ team consisted of DeBalsi, Elisabeth French, Erin Munley and Hefnawy. They combined to run 22:58.69.
